Latala Payne writes, "When teachers and students in Rockingham County move to a predominately digital workplace after the 1:1 Mobile Learning Initiative rolls out, they will need a tool to stay organized. Technology specialists have found a solution."

Canvas LMS (learning management system) will be used to give students and teachers a universal place to meet in the classroom and digital world. Around 60 teachers from across the district had a refresher on the program during a three-day training session earlier this summer.

Dennis Frye, director of media and instructional technology, said they have this program in place for one simple reason.

“Any time students or teachers do digital work, they need a place that they can both go and have that work organized,” he said. “The sole purpose of that is to provide a way for teachers and students to collaborate in a very efficient manner and keep student work organized, help them meet deadlines and help them meet teacher expectations.

He said the program also allows for teachers to be flexible in their curriculums and to easier facilitate outside learning. It was in the schools last year as a pilot program but will be fully implemented this upcoming school year.

“There are some traditional practices that we want teachers to still have, but there are some innovative practices like project-based learning that we want our teachers to have,” he said.

“Canvas can do all of those things. It has the ability to do rubrics, other than just traditional assessment, and it can actually set up a rubric system to allow and facilitate more project-based learning approaches.”
